Introduction

The Office of Research and Development (RDO) at the National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA) originated from the Career Counseling Office of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. In 1994, following the institution’s upgrade to an arts college, the office was expanded into the Research and Development Office in response to institutional development needs. In August 2001, when NTUA was officially elevated to university status, the Research and Development Office was formally established. To align with long-term institutional growth and research promotion, the office has progressively set up dedicated units, including the Academic Development Division, the Research Planning Division, the Industry-Academia Collaboration and Incubation Center, and the Taiwan Cultural Policy Think Tank Center.

In 2020, the office successfully applied for and implemented the Ministry of Education’s University Social Responsibility (USR) Project and established the USR Project Promotion Office through a responsibility-based team structure. In August 2025, in response to the trend of integrating sustainability and social responsibility, the Taiwan Cultural Policy Think Tank Center and the USR Project Promotion Office were merged to form the Center for Sustainability and Social Responsibility Practices. Officially incorporated into NTUA’s organizational structure, the center aims to integrate the university’s artistic expertise to foster local cultural development, fulfill social responsibility, and align with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mission and Tasks
Guided by the core values of Innovation, Collaboration, and Sustainability, the Office of Research and Development serves as NTUA’s “compass” for institutional advancement, integrating resources and planning long-term strategies. Through the Academic Development Division (enhancing academic capacity and international exchange), the Research Planning Division (planning and reviewing institutional development projects), the Industry-Academia Collaboration and Incubation Center (strengthening research-industry collaboration and innovative incubation), and the Center for Sustainability and Social Responsibility Practices (implementing USR and aligning with SDGs), the office comprehensively drives institutional progress.

The office’s main tasks include:

  1. Planning and reviewing NTUA’s mid- to long-term institutional development strategies, while establishing a two-way communication mechanism combining bottom-up and top-down approaches.
  2. Integrating strategic planning, academic research, artistic and performance activities, infrastructure development, major projects, human resources, and budget allocation.
  3. Enhancing teaching excellence and digital literacy, promoting interdisciplinary curriculum collaboration, and cultivating professionals with global vision.
  4. Building platforms for industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurial incubation, while promoting the cultural and creative industries and the application of research achievements.
  5. Advancing USR initiatives through the university’s artistic expertise, fostering community co-prosperity, fulfilling social responsibility, and promoting sustainable development.
